Unlike the Summer Reading Program, this initiative is exclusively for adults and designed to promote lifelong learning, the value of adult literacy, and to build a sense of community among adult readers. While the ultimate reward is a winter filled with great reads, MCLD has added a few incentives to make participants' reading journey more exciting:
- Reach 500 points by Feb. 15 to score four tickets to a Valley Suns basketball game, the official minor league team of the Phoenix Suns.
- Log at least 60 points each week to be automatically entered into weekly prize drawings for Maricopa County Parks day-use passes and other book-themed surprises
- Any person who registers for the program will automatically receive a special bookmark to track progress
“Last year, around 3,000 readers across 14 libraries participated in the Maricopa County Library District’s Winter Reading Program,” said Vice Chair Kate Brophy McGee, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 3. “This fun collaboration between the County’s Library District and Parks and Recreation Department is a great reminder to pick up a good book and take a moment for yourself during this busy holiday season.”
MCLD is also hosting a Winter Reading Community Book Club featuring
The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. The audiobook and eBook is available with no waiting on Libby and Hoopla through Feb. 15. Readers can engage in weekly discussion prompts, share their thoughts, and connect with fellow readers through a
dedicated Facebook event. Themed events and book displays will also occur at MCLD libraries throughout the program. Library events are free and can be found on
MCLD's online event calendar.
“In a busy time of year, reading gives us the chance to slow down, reflect, and connect with stories that shape how we understand the world and one another. We hope our yearly Winter Reading Program helps people rediscover the simple joy of a good book,” said Jeremy Reeder, Maricopa County Library District Director and County Librarian.
